گياه زارعتي از تيرة غلات يكساله بوده و بومي نيمكره جنوبي است كه براي اولين بار توسط كريستف كلمب كشف شد.

تك پايه كه گل نر بصورت خوشه در رأس و گل ماده (بلال) مخروطي و در پايين قرار دارد

تا 18 عدد است.
