سال 1259 شمسي، ديده به جهان گشود. سال هاي نخست عمر را در مدرسه ي حاجي حسن واقع در صالح آباد رشت و مدرسه ي جامعه آن شهر به آموختن مقدمات علوم ديني سپري كرد. <span خواهان رشت كانوني به نام «مجلس اتّحاد» تشكيل دادند و افرادي به عنوان فدايي گرد آوردند. ميرزا كوچك خان كه در آن دوران يك طلبه بود و افكار آزادي خواهانه داشت به مجلس اتحاد پيوست. در سال 1289 شمسي، در نبرد با نيروي طرفدار محمد علي شاه در تركمن صحرا شركت داشت و در اين نبرد زخمي و چندي در بادكوبه در يك بيمارستان بستري گرديد. در سال 1294 شمسي، به جاي «مجلس اتّحاد» «هيأت اتّحاد اسلام» از يك گروه هفده نفري در رشت تشكيل گرديد. بيشتر افراد اين گروه روحاني بودند ميرزا كوچك خان عضو مؤثّر آن بود. اين هيأت هدف خود را خدمت به اسلام و ايران اعلام كرد و به زودي ميرزا كوچك خان رهبري هيأت را بر عهده گرفت. پس از اشغال نواحي شمالي ايران از سوي روسيه ي تزاري، هيأت اتّحاد اسلام به مبارزه با ارتش تزار پرداخت و يك گروه مسلح به عنوان فدايي تشكيل داد و روستاي كسما را در ناحيه ي فومن مركز كار خود قرار داد و در آن جا سازمان اداري و نظامي به وجود آورد. هيأت اتّحاد اسلام، پس از چندي به كميته ي اتّحاد اسلام تبديل شد و اعضاي آن به 27 نفر افزايش يافت و رهبري كميته را ميرزا به عهده گرفت و تا پايان سال 1296 شمسي، بخش وسيعي از گيلان و قسمتي از مازندران، طارم، آستارا، طالش، كجور و تنكابن زير نفوذ كميته درآمد. اين كميته «نهضت جنگل» و «حزب جنگل» نيز ناميده شده است.<span
