تنها به چند دوره معدود جهت کسب درجه لیسانس خود نیاز داشت . این کار را نیز در عرض یکسال انجام داد . نخست با این گمان که بهتر است روان شناس بالینی شود ، در شیکاگو به کار در رشته روان شناسی ادامه
داد . به هر حال به زودی به کار های پیاژه علاقه مند شد و شروع به مصاحبه با کودکان
و نوجوانان درمورد موضوعات اخلاقی نمود . نتیجه
آن رساله دکترای او بود که نخستین تفسیر از تئوری نوین مرحله ای او محسوب می شود . کلبرگ یک انسان فروتن و بی علاقه
به تشریفات و درضمن یک مدرس واقعی است . وی
به مدت طولانی و به طور عمیق درباره موضوعات گسترده ای در روان شناسی و فلسفه اندیشیده
