خصوصي‌ترين اقدامي مي باشد كه ممكن است از جانب يك شخص سر بزند، معهذا مناسبات اجتماعي در سبب سازي آن نقش با اهميتي دارند و اين اقدام ناشي از يك برخورد اجتماعي عميق است. و گرچه در ظاهر هدف خودكشي منحصراً بررسي هاي مسأله خودكشي به اين نتيجه رسيده اند كه تنها انسان مي‌باشد كه مي تواند مرگ را خود اداره كند و خود را بكشد و اين حقيقت دارد كه برخي از حيوانات تحت شرايط معين رفتارشان طوري است كه منجر به مرگ آنها مي شود اما شاهدي در دست نيست كه اين رفتار حيوانات با آرزوي مرگ باشد و عمل خود نابودي كه با انديشة مردن همراه نباشد خودكشي نيست.
